A Criminal Record Check is a record check service based on an applicant’s name and date of birth to determine if there is a criminal record, also known as a Background Check, Criminal Background Check, Police Clearance Certificate, Police Check, Police Records Check

This Criminal Record Check is intended for applicants who require a Basic or Enhanced Police criminal record check also known as Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check in Ontario, This check is NOT intended for applicants who are seeking volunteer and/or employment with vulnerable persons, as Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) must be done by a local police where an applicant resides.

Name -based criminal record checks are done checking against the RCMP’s Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) system, They consist of a check of the National Repository of Criminal Records based on a person’s name and date of birth. It may also include searches of other national and local databases.

Name based  checks have weaknesses in verifying  a person’s identity due to some last names being the same, differences in spellings, use of nick names, legal name changes and the intentional changing of names to avoid a records of criminal history.

It is possible that a “Name and date of birth” based search of the National Criminal record Repository”, will not produce conclusive results due to a possible match. This doesn’t mean that the person who sought the search results has a criminal record. However, to ensure that the person who received the match is not the same person, fingerprint comparison needs to take place. Fingerprints Plus provides this service and submits digital fingerprints electronically to RCMP.
